They have been very slow in producing. So today I finally picked a green bell pepper to use for dinner. I wanted something to add more pepper but balance out the heat of the jalapeƱo I was using. I dice up half and toss it into my recipe and pop a strip from the other half into my mouth. </div><div>Imagine my surprise when I discovered that this pepper had some HEAT! Still sweet like a bell but with a lovely slow burn. I'm guessing that it crossed with one of the many, many hot peppers we grow every year.</div><div>I think our enchiladas will be a little more spicy than intended.</div>Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412316033303635508.post-44985109662417095062015-08-19T12:08:00.001-05:002015-08-19T12:08:03.764-05:00Heirloom Amana Orange TomatoThis is, hands down, my favorite tomato.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5PJpr1jSscE/VdS38tN1iaI/AAAAAAAAFFU/fd2BvFDmAmc/s640/blogger-image-43739671.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5PJpr1jSscE/VdS38tN1iaI/AAAAAAAAFFU/fd2BvFDmAmc/s640/blogger-image-43739671.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BYYyCOzV-Pk/VdS37eQLrUI/AAAAAAAAFFM/05kCVgvPowQ/s640/blogger-image-735659926.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BYYyCOzV-Pk/VdS37eQLrUI/AAAAAAAAFFM/05kCVgvPowQ/s640/blogger-image-735659926.jpg"></a></div>Amana Orange- weighing in at 2 lb 2 oz of deliciousness!</div>Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412316033303635508.post-12120388190314645102015-07-18T21:30:00.001-05:002015-07-18T21:30:59.892-05:00More flowers!The pollinator garden is in full bloom! But things have been busy. My middle child graduated from high school last weekend and my daughter and her fiance are home for the week. The garden is in and things are progressing.<br />
The weather has been varied and unpredictable, but this morning, the air was cool and the sun shining on the rain-soaked flowers. Beautiful! I thought I'd share a few of my favorites.<br />

The latest winter storm, Linus, dropped about 13 inches of snow on us on Sunday. </div>

It's been cold but it is so beautiful, I just had to share.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I know I said I'd be better about posting. I've just been busy with other things and nothing post-worthy seems to be going on here. We've all been passing around respiratory crud, work has been super busy and it's winter so there is nothing going on outside, other than we've started to get a very few eggs from the hens.<br />
<br />
So, hopefully I'll post more when it gets warmer and there are more exciting things going on here.Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412316033303635508.post-31136139817037248352014-12-28T16:10:00.001-06:002014-12-28T16:10:15.623-06:00Ooo!!<div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">A late present from Santa!</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-7n11JY7XZOI/VKB_xWQAeEI/AAAAAAAAE_g/Ys-lVC-3cIE/s640/blogger-image-51477832.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-7n11JY7XZOI/VKB_xWQAeEI/AAAAAAAAE_g/Ys-lVC-3cIE/s640/blogger-image-51477832.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412316033303635508.post-48498489259403593632014-12-25T08:00:00.002-06:002014-12-25T08:00:22.930-06:00Merry Christmas!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This evening on the way home from work, Vernon wanted to stop at the hobby store in the mall to pick up something he needed. On one edge of the parking lot was the farmer's market. It was the last market of the season and the vendors were willing to deal. I didn't need anything... really... But I couldn't resist this pumpkin !</span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A8y2IVXIPUA/VFBMIKruzUI/AAAAAAAAE-c/BS7jaZHRn1o/s640/blogger-image-191210941.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A8y2IVXIPUA/VFBMIKruzUI/AAAAAAAAE-c/BS7jaZHRn1o/s640/blogger-image-191210941.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Isn't it awesome! I asked and the variety is 'One Too Many' also sometimes called the bloodshot eyeball pumpkin - with good reason.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Research says that it is edible and makes good soup. I'll have to see. I don't think I have the heart to carve it for Halloween.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I'll definitely be saving seeds! From what I found it is an open pollinated variety so again, we'll see what happens next year.</div><br></div>Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412316033303635508.post-36180230356546149952014-10-26T18:00:00.001-05:002014-10-26T18:00:53.907-05:00Trade!Well, we didn't get the chicken coop cleaned out today. Our friend Roger called and asked for help. He has been having health issues since losing part of a leg a couple of years ago and just isn't able to do all those things he used to do. And his wife has just recently returned home after her father's funeral so she has problems of her own. They asked for help cleaning out their garden and taking down fences and trellises. It was a lovely day and the coop can wait til next weekend. <div>Sharon and I dug sweet potatoes among other things and we were sent home with a big bag of them. Yum! Roasted sweet potatoes for dinner tonight!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-eZ-yy4sacnM/VE19Hky5KkI/AAAAAAAAE-M/KTCcY0C7df0/s640/blogger-image--329760179.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-eZ-yy4sacnM/VE19Hky5KkI/AAAAAAAAE-M/KTCcY0C7df0/s640/blogger-image--329760179.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412316033303635508.post-68728690216911738112014-10-25T10:43:00.001-05:002014-10-25T10:43:54.182-05:00Confusing weatherIt is one of those 'soft' mornings. You know, the kind where it is warm and humid and the air feels soft. If it weren't for the changing leaves, the frost bitten garden and the molting chickens, I'd swear it was spring.<br />
It will be a busy weekend here. Cleaning out the chicken coop and prepping it for winter is on the agenda, as are senior photos for my oldest son. <br />
Last night was the final home football game of the season and so, it was senior recognition night for football, cheerleading and marching band. I must say, Ian looks great in uniform!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C3nfawz2VZQ/VEvEdsP888I/AAAAAAAAE9Y/KhOvIJBBjGQ/s1600/DSC01111.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C3nfawz2VZQ/VEvEdsP888I/AAAAAAAAE9Y/KhOvIJBBjGQ/s1600/DSC01111.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
For halftime, they did their annual Halloween costume show. The weather certainly cooperated as heavy fog started rolling into the stadium.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-h96otVntlVE/VEvEkFDGyAI/AAAAAAAAE9g/jUqJiGoBGOs/s1600/DSC01127.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-h96otVntlVE/VEvEkFDGyAI/AAAAAAAAE9g/jUqJiGoBGOs/s1600/DSC01127.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
So, I've avoided work for long enough. I suppose I should get started on my mile-long to do list for the weekend. sigh....Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412316033303635508.post-36064819941191868862014-10-18T13:21:00.001-05:002014-10-18T13:26:03.714-05:00Fun!<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
Vernon and I actually went out to a social event last night! Shocking, I know! We went to a local wine bar to meet up with other members of a local steampunk group. A grand time was had by all!<br />

The forecast is for the first hard frost of the fall tonight.<div>We've had a few light frosts here and there already but it's supposed to get down to 32*F if not a little colder tonight so this should be the end of the garden. </div><div>So... Today I want to bring in all the squash that are *almost* ripe and pick what few green tomatoes that are left as well as any peppers I can find. Honestly, I'm ready to be done. The weird weather we've had has made for a lackluster season. </div><div><br></div><div>Time to hope for a mild winter and a successful greenhouse.</div>Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412316033303635508.post-78277220779258487882014-10-04T17:52:00.001-05:002014-10-04T17:52:25.540-05:00A soup kind of weekendBrrr... I know it's October but I'm not ready for this chilly weather. So, I'm making soup. <div>I had to work today and came home to discover that the buttercup squash Mom gave me had a soft spot. So I will make some soup with the salvageable parts and odds and ends from the garden. Mmm...</div><div>It isn't what's for dinner but I plan to have some for lunch tomorrow and freeze the rest in containers to take for lunches to work.</div><div><br></div><div>It's soup season again!! Yum!</div>Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412316033303635508.post-40619331822515476312014-09-28T09:45:00.001-05:002014-09-28T09:45:51.223-05:00Fire and IceI have been really happy so far with my little frozen cubes of tomato sauce. They have been handy when I have had a recipe that just calls for a little tomato sauce (like the squid ink sauce recipe my brother sent me from his trip to Venice). <div>I still have a few tomatoes left and I have some ghost peppers... so, I'm going to make ghost sauce cubes. I found out last year that an entire pint of ghost sauce is often a bit much- but sometimes things need a little kick. So, I'm gonna make fire ice!!!</div><div><br></div><div>Wish me luck! The range hood will be running on high!</div>Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412316033303635508.post-8547525313245386332014-09-14T11:12:00.001-05:002014-09-14T11:12:29.292-05:00Apples!<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-u8JZ_3lzqfY/VBW-a2dvQPI/AAAAAAAAE8U/SMzCsOxA0lg/s640/blogger-image-663473225.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-u8JZ_3lzqfY/VBW-a2dvQPI/AAAAAAAAE8U/SMzCsOxA0lg/s640/blogger-image-663473225.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The first official harvest from the orchard we planted. The trees have grown well. We got a single 'Crimson Crisp' and a pail of 'Goldrush'. They need to have a little algae scrubbed off (darn that cool, wet weather!) but they are totally orgainic and oh, so tasty!!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Next year I hope a couple of the other trees start producing. Our big tree was pretty much a bust since we had a late frost while it was in full bloom. But it probably needed a year to rest after all it produced last year.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And I think I need to plant another pear. The tree we planted is pretty big but nothing set on so I think it probably needs a pollinator. I had hopes that there would be a pear tree near enough but it doesn't seem like it. Oh well...</div>Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412316033303635508.post-39630967256928361152014-09-13T17:35:00.001-05:002014-09-13T17:35:37.301-05:00Too Soon!!!The thermometer on the porch said 36*F when I left for work this morning. I just got back in from the garden and- yep- we had frost! On September 13tj!! That's just wrong! It wasn't enough to kill anything but my squash vines have been tipped as has the basil.<div><br></div><div>I tell you- it is definitely global weirding this year with the weather!!</div>Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412316033303635508.post-25351060411265198232014-09-07T14:54:00.001-05:002014-09-07T14:54:58.251-05:00Trying something new<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Since my tomatoes are kind of a bust this year, I think I'm probably done with canning. </span><br><div><div>I had enough that I had to do something but not enough to fire up the canner. So I'm trying something new: tomato cubes!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-bW0tEDnDjRc/VAy4ENvZSFI/AAAAAAAAE8E/E5T7YmDg5CI/s640/blogger-image-642069537.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-bW0tEDnDjRc/VAy4ENvZSFI/AAAAAAAAE8E/E5T7YmDg5CI/s640/blogger-image-642069537.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I made a really thick sauce - almost, but not quite paste - and loaded it into old ice cube trays. Now, when a recipe calls for a tablespoon of tomato paste or I just need a little to liven things up, I don't need to open a whole jar. We'll see how it works out.</div><br></div></div>Judy Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01121300109427407095noreply@blogger.com4
