Hooray for Iowa

I try to stay away from voicing political opinions  here but I have to share how proud I am to be an Iowan today.  I know there are many people who won't agree with the decision that was made by the Iowa Supreme Court today but I think it's absolutely great that Iowa has joined the ranks of the few states to legalize same sex marriage.  I have many friends who have been denied the chance to marry the one they love and now they will have the chance if they choose.

  1. I read that yesterday, and it made me so happy, just thinking of the choices opened up to so many people. Here comes another "hooray for Iowa" from over here in Connecticut!

  3. That's awesome!!!! I'm still disgusted that people in Michigan voted against it, as the wording on our amendment was such that it is now being used to deny benefits to peoples' partners and partners' kids and families are really scrambling to try to retain coverage. Made me sad to call myself a Michigander. You have every right to be proud!

  5. I am also so very glad to hear it! I think it surprised so many simply because it was Iowa, a state thought by most to be strict protestant conservative and least likely to approve. I say, never underestimate the common sense of a farming state! LOL.

To my view, and it isn't always popular with my conservative family, marriages performed by the state are simply civil contracts meant to ease the way in civil things. Marriages performed in the religion of your belief is a marriage. There is such a huge difference between those two and it is nice that states are realizing it now.

  6. I was proud of Iowa when I heard it too!

We'll see what happens if/when it gets on the ballot though. Wisc did it recently and we now have a constitutional amendment stating that marriage is between one man and one woman.

  7. Let's hope it doesn't turn over like some other states have. But geez, if it can happen in Iowa, who's next?

    I sure am happy.
