Astounded

This afternoon, on the way home from picking up J15 from Art club after school, we stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few things. We didn't need much- in fact, I purchased only three items: cheese, tortillas and a loaf of bread (yeah, I know, I could make my own but it's a crazy week). I took in a single cloth bag to use for my purchase. Imagine my stunned surprise when the checker asked me, in all seriousness, if I wanted all of my things in the same bag! WTF??!

  1. Did she know how to pack the bag?? Sorry...that cracked me up.. was she trying to be humorous? Or was she serious...I think my jaw would have dropped...Did you say anything to them?? Lisa

  2. Oh, yeah, this kid was serious. At the time, all I could say was "yes". Afterwords, of course, I thought of all kinds of snappy comebacks... maybe I should have asked for them to be gift wrapped.

  3. We get this all the time--despite the fact I'm grocery shopping with my big, muscular husband, who could probably carry the clerk one-handed, let alone a well-filled canvas bag. On the other hand, my mother, who's 77 and handicapped, has to fight to get her bags light enough she can carry them.

I think it comes down to "people ain't too bright."

  5. I had to chuckle at the idiot checker. They either fill it so full that you can't possibly carry it without it bursting at the seams and spilling the groceries all over the floor OR they will do the one thing in the bag thing...crazy....just crazy...debbie

  6. I have long since concluded that efficient bag packing at grocery stores is not a criteria for being hired. I've gotten to where I sometimes combine sacks as they are packing and tossing the empty back to them to give them the hint.

  7. I was always taught to put dairy in one bag, freezer items in one bag, refrigerated items in one bag, meat in one bag, dry goods in another bag, cleaning products in another bag, non-grocery non-cleaning items in another bag, and bread on top of eggs. Then to make sure that they aren't full to the top.

Then people would come in and bitch about how there were too many bags... Or too little... Or too heavy... Or too light... Or... Well, let's just say that no matter what you do, someone is going to be calling you an idiot and getting upset with you.

I'm glad I don't do those types of jobs anymore and that I don't have to deal with all the idiot customers. I also now clearly spell out what I expect when I go through the cashier line... In a friendly, mature, respectful way.

  8. It would have been an understandable question if I had purchased multiple items or something messy (think drippy meat). But I had three things- three- none of which posed any danger to each other. sigh...
Jen- don't worry- I'm always polite to checkers- I've done my time in sales as well.
Really, all I ask is some common sense.
