Chickens...

can be incredibly stupid!  I do think I may have the dumbest flock of chickens on record... really!
I went out this evening to close up the coop.  It has been a lovely day here, a bit overcast but up into the low 40s. It's still 38F at 530 pm.  Not bad for mid December.  So... the chickens had been enjoying the day outside.  But, silly bird brains... they were enjoying it outside so much that they didn't seem to notice that it was getting dark inside. By the time I got out there, they were all huddled in a mass OUTSIDE.  Because, you know- it was DARK in that coop!
To get them in, I had to turn on the light inside.  Silly birds.  Then, of course, I turn off the light and they're all floundering around in the dark.  So, softie that I am, I got a flashlight to give them enough light to find the roost.
Yup, chickens can be dumb.  They've never done this one before so I do hope it's not a new pattern.  I hope they learned their lesson.

  1. They are lucky to have a good mama. Mr. Fox would have had them.....!

  3. dr momi- here it could be Mr Fox, or the great horned owl that frequently swoops through the barnyard.
    LindaM- I was laughing too! I didn't know they would do something like that either. Who knows what was going through their bird brains.

  5. Aww like a mother hen.. ;) Which probably is totally the wrong term but I'm a city girl. The closest I get to a chicken is at the grocery store..

  6. Oh dear. If I had known you have less-than-gifted birds, I would have gladly sent one of my extra roosters instead of culling them. They were genius level (for chickens, lol).

  7. Debbie- Mama Cluck?! LOL!!!
    JennM- You should see if you can get some chickens. Your girls would love them!!
    tpals- the really sad thing is that the rooster was out there with them. I guess they wouldn't go in and he wouldn't leave them. Go figure. I'm still not sure how this happened, unless there was a stray ray of sunlight outside that they stayed in too long.
    Erin- At least I can laugh about it too. And at least it was warm.

  11. I suggest hanging a battery operated clock on the outside of the coop right over the door so they can see what time it is and know when to trundle on in for the night. ;o}

    (Our dumb geese rarely go into their shelter - where we lock them up for safety - at night until my husband goes out and tells them it's time to go to bed. Then they waddle right in the door.)

  12. Susan- I would have understood if there was something different. But, no, they were just being difficult.
    Mama pea- I'll get right on that clock when you come teach the hens to tell time.
