Just Another Manic Monday

Ok, I'm stealing the line... but that is what it has felt like today.  Having worked all day on Saturday, my weekend didn't start until Sunday... and I had things to do.  J17 and I ended up running a few shopping errands Sunday afternoon so I didn't get as much accomplished around the house as I would have liked.  So, that left today, which was my 'day off'- hahaha.  Sadly, I slept badly.  A combination of an unhappy stomach (I wonder if I picked up a touch of what kept J17 home from school on Friday),  a front moving in with incredible wind gusts in the middle of the night and hyperactive cats kept me from sleeping well.  Fortunately, V got up to see the children off to school and I finally got some sleep between 7 and 9, although with really weird dreams...
But then it was up with a full day ahead.  I did manage to get almost everything accomplished on my list and a few more.  Between Sunday and today, I managed to get pretty much caught up.  The one thing I didn't do was finish that baby quilt.  I keep hoping that it will be rainy (as forecast) but, while cooler than it has been today (only mid 50's) the weather was fine, if windy.  What have I accomplished this wacky weekend?
Sunday- got the mid-garden tilled and a rabbit fence put up.  Planted peas, lettuce, carrots and kohlrabi.  I harvested some more nettles and got them blanched and in the fridge for use in pasta.  J17 and I did some shopping errands- some stuff for college in the fall and some more urgent needs.
Today, even with little sleep and a late start, I was in a pretty manic state in trying to getting stuff done.  Today included: 5 loads of laundry, I did the dishes, made 3 batches of pasta (one for dinner, two for the freezer),  one batch of sourdough crackers, made a run to the farm store for chicken feed and onion sets as well as a stop in at The Outlet (where V and I stopped on Friday to check it out- it's right down the road from the farm store) to pick up a few other things (I got 25 lbs of flour- Woot!).  I managed to plant said onion sets in the garden and froze two containers of chives for the winter.  I also managed to get most of my warm weather seeds started. So... I started 10 varieties of tomato, 8 kinds of peppers, eggplant and basil.  I'm starting not only seeds for myself but also for the plant sale that we participate in at our church that benefits the local crisis center.  I've still got a few herbs that I want/need to get started but I ran out of steam for the day.
Now, I'm about ready to crash for the night.  With working last Saturday, I've got Friday off so that means that I only have to work three days this week... I could get to like that!!
Someone last week at work commented that it must be restful to have Mondays off,  I laughed and told them that I work much harder on my 'days off' than I do at work.  But somehow, it doesn't feel like work. Being busy at home makes me feel quite content.

  1. Hmmmm... sounds like we had the same day - except your version of mania was much more productive than mine!

My day started at the crack of dawn waking up to a nice wet bed that some feline had peed upon. I took the likely culprit (the one with pee all over her hind feet) to the vet for urinalysis, and since it came back normal we've now just got "behavioral issues" to deal with. Oh, the joy!

So I had to wash all of the bedding, and remembered why I sprung for the super extra huge capacity washer (which seems WAY too big most of the time.) But the crazy wind dried everything much faster and more efficiently than the drier would.

Oh, I am ready for sleep. I think I'm exiling all fe-lions from the bedroom tonight. It might not solve the peeing problem, but at least I'll be able to get some sleep so I can face tomorrow with a giant bottle of enzymatic cleaner!

    1. Oh, I HATE cat pee. EEEW. What a way to wake up. I'm so glad that neither of our cats has developed that nasty habit.

  2. Sounds like you had an extremely productive weekend! A lot of work I'm sure but I know that always makes me feel so much more content Sunday night knowing the time was well spent! Seems like lots of us are having sleep issues, must be a seasonal thing?

    1. It did feel good going back to work today knowing that I was at least somewhat caught up. And I don't know what's up with the sleep thing.

    1. Judy- I was making fresh homemade pasta. Two batches of green pasta made with nettles and one with lemon pepper. One batch of pasta takes 3 eggs (with the recipe I use) and is just enough for my hungry family (plus maybe some leftovers for me to take to work). Also, I've heard that you can freeze fresh pasta for later so I'm trying to make pasta to use up extra eggs. And we've got plentiful nettles which are tasty and nutritious. My boys will eat the pasta but not the greens- go figure. Plus, since it cooks in about 4 minutes, it is a quick meal.

  4. 'Tis my humble opinion that the sleep problems many in "our group" are experiencing are caused by stress, worry and anxiety. I guess it's just a part of life . . . but all the more so in these upsetting social times. However, we are all made out of tough stuff and will go on to do what needs to be done. (How's that for a pep talk?)

You continue to operate like the Energizer Bunny so you should never feel you didn't get enough done. (Ha! What am I preaching? Me being the worst offender of those kind of self-damaging thoughts.)

I had to smile at you being excited about bringing home a 25 lb. stash of flour. Who else but us homestead/homemaker types could relate so clearly to that?

    1. I'd agree with the stress thing. I know I worry too much about things I can't control... but that's jut how I am. At least we don't let it stop us from doing what needs to be done- right?? And, yes, you sell yourself short much to often as well.

As for the flour. at 25 lbs for $9.49 I was doing the happy dance ;-)

  5. Wow! I am tired just reading all that you did! :-) I love getting deals on food supplies. Does that make us "preppers"? LOL. The pasta you made with nettles looked great. I'll have to try that.

    1. I'm not sure that getting good deals make you a prepper. I've definitely got some prepper tendencies but I'm not as hard core as some.
And you should definitely try that nettle pasta- you won't be disappointed.

  6. I worked that schedule when I was a hairdresser and ended up loving having Mondays off because back then there were less crowds anywhere....the bank for example or shopping in general. But, it was not restful by any means. Great price on tnat flour!

    1. I am SO, SO loving my Mondays off. Not only can I be productive without children underfoot at home (or just making more of a mess- LOL) but I can run errands like you mentioned.
And restful.... do any of us know what that is?

Glad you stopped in. I would love to hear from you.
