Sea Kittens??!!
OK, now I've seen just about everything! PETA has started a new campaign. They want to 'rebrand' fish as 'Sea Kittens'. The theory being that people won't want to eat something called a kitten. How lame is that! I'm all for animal rights. I am a meat eater but I oppose factory farms and animal cruelty- but sea kittens!!! Someone missed the mark on this one. I would think they have better things to do with their time. But creating your own sea kitten was kind of fun. The children enjoyed it.

I don't quite know how to respond to PETA's decision... just seems off to me. I do see that people in general tend to be more responsive to protecting animals that are cute, cuddly, have some seemingly "human" traits, things like that. It is easier to rally a crowd to help koalas than a dying grasshopper species in the same area. But yet, "sea kittens" for fish? It just seems off. As if it is just using trickery to get people to be aware of overfishing etc.... rather than recognizing fish for themselves (as it were) it is dressing them up in the guise of sea kittens....
ReplyDeleteOkay, I've likely gone on way too much... just kind of struck a chord because I have really noticed how animal rights/protection mailings/ads do focus on attracting people with the cute, cuddly images... I guess it might work in the end? It'll be interesting to see how the campaign goes.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this one was off the mark. I mean, really, no matter how much you dress it up, a flounder isn't going to be cute.
ReplyDeleteAfter church this morning my husband commented that "Follow me, and I will make you herders of cats" just doesn't have the same ring to it. Although sometimes it may be more true.
ooookay. I'll still be eating fish, thank you!

Livinginalocalzone, ...ya mean like the video that says "momma bear takes her darling babies to see daddy bear catching fish"??? While it should say "the mother and cubs wander down to the river. The odds are fairly high that the male grizzly will attack/attack & kill the cubs".
ReplyDeleteUm, yeah. They don't mention THAT, do they? :)
