Kitchen obsessed

Sorry for the silence.  I've been obsessed with kitchen planning.  We've got a plan for the cabinets, now we just need to decide on a brand and where to order from.  Any suggestions or warnings?
We were looking at Mid Continent cabinets that we can either order from a local dealer or order online and do some extra work to get the details we want.  Or, there are Omega cabinets that are made locally in Waterloo. Or... KraftMaid, or Diamond or Schrock- although we're leaning away from them due to hearing lots of complaints about poor quality.   Too many choices!
And don't even get me started on the counter tops....

  1. Hi there! I'm in an apartment now and have never designed a kitchen redo. However, my sister loves Home and Garden TV and I've watched so many amazing shows with her. I just looked at their website and here's a kitchen page.

I drilled down to a kitchen cabinet page

Consumer reports had an online page

  3. I don't know the name but my parents had a local company in Memphis, Missouri (about an 2 hr drive from your house) build custom cabinets and install them (via a crew of Amish) in their kitchen and since my parents are the most frugal people I know, they can't be all that pricey. Not sure how far their range is and if they would go up to where you live. They are extremely well built and look beautiful.

  4. Thanks Suzanne. I'll be sure to check out the links.
Erin- I've got no problem with IKEA- in fact, when we re-did our kitchen in VA we used cabinets from there. Unfortunately, our nearest store isn't near.
Ed- We're not sure about complete custom cabinets. We are planning to do the installation ourselves since we have done it before. And I know that labor can really add up fast.

  5. We just (yesterday) put an island in our kitchen. I managed to accumulate from work $500 of gift cards, which we used to buy their stock cabinets and then we went to a local amish man and had a butcher block countertop made - for $400 for an 8 foot by 42 inch countertop made of oak, maple, cherry and walnut. We love it already so much, the whole kitchen will have butcher block countertop...yes it's a little more high maintenance, but I don't have to worry about nicks and scratches in it:) As for cabinets, when we get the funds accumulated for them, i'm going back to the amishman - talk about gorgeous, sturdy and SOLID wood all the way around:) I'll have a blog post up on it later today....
