The spiral takes shape

The rain held off for long enough today that I got to do some construction on the herb spiral.  I'm modifying my initial plans but I think this will be much more stable.
We had one of our retaining wall blocks that had broken last fall during construction so I used it to support the center of the spiral so I didn't need to use so many bricks.
The herb spiral begins to take shape
Now I just need to fill in the dirt and add some topsoil.  There were a few more bricks added after that photo was taken.
While I was out with my camera I snapped a few photos of other things outside.
I actually don't remember the name of these.  They were one that I picked up for a quarter at the end of the season two years ago.
And the freeze doesn't seem to have effected the peonies.
I did make it to the last of the winter farmer's markets today and found a lovely little sage plant.  What I did not get done is make pasta.  I was planning on it but then Roger and Sharon stopped by and we spent most of the afternoon chatting with them.  A distraction that was definitely worth the delay for pasta.  I did send them home with 2 dozen eggs which helped clear out the fridge some.
Oh, and I nearly forgot.  Yesterday was our 'farm-iversary'  We closed on this place in 2009.  Hard to believe we have been here for three years already.  We've come a long way but there is still so much to do.

  1. Wow, you've got quite the creative herb spiral going there! Can't wait to see it planted out this summer.

Congrats on your three year farm-iversary. Seems that you've gotten A LOT done in that time. (The list of things yet to do will never end. I'm convinced of it. So we just have to learn to enjoy the journey!)

    1. Looking back, I'm amazed and amused at how naive we were in thinking how long things would take us. In our minds, we had the house renovated in a month and the landscaping done a month or two after that. HAHAHAHA....

    1. With a spiral, you can actually get more plants in the same area because they are growing at different heights rather than in a row. It also just looks cool. I have a thing for spirals anyway.

    1. It really didn't take as much time as I thought. But it definitely took more bricks. I was lucky to have that center landscape block to hold up the middle but it still took all 100 bricks that I had and I would have liked to go even higher with the bricks. It is about 5 foot diameter.

  5. At first ,I thought you were putting up a fancy fire pit,I was thinking ,well those center bricks will be cinder, glad it will be a herb garden.aren't you afraid the deer will consume it all?

    1. Nope, we've got a firebowl already. As for the deer. They have never seemed to bother the herbs before in other locations so I don't think this will be any worse. And, with the dog around, they don't usually come up this close to the house.

  6. How cool is that! I wasn't thinking it was going to be 3-dimensional, it's' fun to watch it take shape.

    1. By having the center raised, not only does it allow for the planting of things that have slightly different water requirements (stuff that likes it drier at the top and stuff that likes it wetter at the bottom) but it is easier to reach the stuff in the center without having to step through the others.

  9. Your herb spiral is looking good! Can't wait to see it all planted out!

Congrats on your 3 year anniversary! Everything always takes longer than you think it will, doesn't it?! Our plot is itty bitty and 5 years later we're still working to make it "ours"...I can only imagine how long it will take when we eventually have a large piece of property ;-)
