Firsts

Two firsts today.
My first posted photos with the new camera.
And my first sourdough bread.
I was pleased with how it turned out.  I have never made sourdough before and I was amazed that it is a 2 day process.  I did two in loaf pans for sandwiches and one 'rustic' loaf:
It has good flavor but isn't terribly sour yet- but it is still a young starter and I know it will improve with age.
I was also quite pleased with the texture.  It was fine grained and has that lovely chewy sourdough texture.
But wait... why does my rustic loaf look like an evil cat?????

  1. You've got some mighty fine lookin' loaves of sourdough bread there, Lady! You're pushing me toward getting brave enough to try some sourdough bread myself.

An evil cat? No, but I do see an evil snake head. (But then I've got a phobia about snakes. Yuck.)

    1. Ok- I can see the snake as well. I can't imagine you having a phobia of any kind.

  7. I have seen sourdough all over the internet and throughout the blog world but I never really paid attention, but those do look so good. So how did you get your starter?
Forgive me if you already posted and I missed it. My reading time is hit and miss.
I would like to try something new.

    1. Laura- you can make your own starter easily. You can 'capture' wild yeast or cheat and use some dried yeast. Tom cued me in (after I already had mine started, of course) that if you google Oregon Trail Sourdough, you can get a freeze dried sample of starter that has been going for 147 years! You could be part of history. If mine fails, I may do that.

  8. I just tried baking sourdough for the first time recently too! It's so fantastic! But 2 days is a lot of planning involved.

    1. I'm hoping that by having the starter going it will inspire me to bake more often. I'm hoping that if I can get into a rhythm it won't be so bad. This time, I started my first ferment at night so it could work overnight and then I started the bread baking the next morning. I'm hoping it gets faster as the starter ages but it seems to have taken longer for the bread to rise than with regular yeast.
