OK... another rant coming

I15 decided to try to create a Facebook account this evening to keep up with friends and his big sister.  For some reason Facebook doesn't believe that his name is his real name and are requiring a copy of a government issued ID.  Really?  So, since I have been thinking about biting the bullet and creating a Facebook account to keep up with Justine in college.  Guess what?  They don't think my name is real either and are asking me to send them a copy of my ID.
You know what?  Maybe this is part of their new security but I don't need Facebook that bad.  If they don't believe that I'm who I say I am without providing a copy of my driver's license they can F#&K off.  I mean really, I'm 50!  Like I'm going to pretend to be someone else.  I've got enough trouble being myself.

Here ends the rant.

    1. I have never bothered with one but I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of stuff that Justine posts there since I don't have one. But now...

  2. Already deleted mine. Got REALLY sick of being followed around by people who wouldn't give me the time of day back in high school. And don't EVEN get me started about their "privacy" issues!

    1. I do have a few friends from HS who have wondered why I don't have a FB page. Granted I went to a small school (99 in my graduating class) and we actually all got along.

  3. A lot of my friends have made up names with no problem... wonder if this is a recent development. But you can give them one name and use a different screen name, and in neither case would it have to be a "real" name... So I would give my real name as "Susan Smith" and screen name = whatever you want your friends to see your name as.
If you are concerned with privacy you can also make up a birthdate and use a different name of a current location.

    1. This is there new thing to keep people from using fake names. So you have to provide them with a copy of your ID "with your name and birthdate clearly visible" so no more made up stuff for them.

  4. They are making people lie.. that is not right.. Facebook has had a lot of problems.. It's a shame that a few people who have caused trouble makes it bad for everyone else.
Sorry you have problems with FB>. that is a shame..

    1. Actually, I think they're trying to keep people from lying. But, I agree, a few people made it bad for everyone else.

  5. This must be something new - I am very close to deleting my page. It's just a pain and most of the postings on it are not very interesting. It is a total waste of time. I would NEVER give them anything but my name. That is way too invasive. Who the heck to they think they are?

    1. They ask for name and birthdate but no matter what you enter you get back a message stating that "FB requires everyone to use their REAL name and birthdate" and yours has been rejected so please provide a copy of your ID.

If they're going to ask for your ID no matter what, say so up front and get it over with. This 'we don't believe that is your real name" business is just crap.

  6. Amazing! I would never, ever send them a copy of my ID. I also don't need social media that f&*king bad.

    1. I've gotten along just fine this long, I'm sure the world won't end without a FB page. Sadly, though, since I am hoping to be able to spend some time trying to grow a quilting/custom sewing business I thought a FB page would be helpful for that. Maybe not.

  7. Are you kidding? That's CRAZY!!!! Being a military family, Facebook has been awesome for keeping in touch on the fly with distant family without planning phone calls, etc and a great way for us spouses left here on deployment to ask for help and get it right away so I couldn't imaging deleting it right now, I imagine your son is in the same boat somewhat wanting to share things during the day with big sis without the hassle of phone calls. It's a shame that there are so many dangers/abusers of technology in society that such an invasion of privacy is asked for. Ugh, now i'm ranting too!

    1. Even more disturbing is that V discovered that for the last few months FB has been randomly restricting access to individual's accounts until they provide a copy of their ID. But they updated their TOS to say they could do that. They are a private company so can do what they want but it seems like quite a few people are bailing rather than comply.
But I can see how it would be so great for military families. Just makes you wonder how many people know they're doing this...
