A grocery confession

I have a confession to make....
I used a box mix tonight for dinner. It is one of my few grocery prepackaged indulgences. What do I fall victim to, you may ask? Ok, it is Zatarain's Jambalaya Mix. We love that stuff, and their chicken creole as well. Oh, I know I could learn to make it myself from scratch but I'm lazy on occasion.
This is one of those quick easy meals that I make to use up little bits of leftover meat in the fridge. I do add extra rice to the mix and whatever leftovers are handy. Tonight we had the mix with chicken, a bit of Italian Sausage and some frozen shrimp thrown in for good measure (the shrimp were not leftovers). Sometimes it has left over bits of beef or pork.
I do try to cook mainly from scratch but sometimes it's good to be bad.
Anybody else have a grocery confession?

  1. Oh! Me me me! I have a grocery confession! Actually, I might have two. First, I do make biscuits sometimes using Bisquick mix (the light version) although I add cheese and herbs. I should probably make my own "bisquick" mix. Full time work plus part time law school plus farm = no spare time. So, it's a convenience thing for me. The second confession is strange. I have my parents in Canada send me Canadian Kraft Mac and Cheese, which in Canada is called "Kraft Dinner" or "KD" for short, and it's MUCH stronger flavoured (the cheese part) than here. Believe it or not, it's a "treat" for me that I allow myself maybe once every three months. Crazy eh?

  7. For me, any of the microwave rice packages. Ready in 90 seconds? SOLD! And I am admitting that I pay waaayy to much to have Ellsworth, WI cheese curds sent to me in VA! Doesn't seem to matter that we buy a bunch while we are home, they are eaten on the drive back! Oh, yeah, and Boca Burgers... the kids love 'em and they are fast and not messy!

  8. I used to eat a lot of Zatarains and really liked it. Haven't had any for awhile but I now have a hunkering for some Jambalaya!

I also use the jarred Alfredo sauce when I make my famous cajun fish and rice with white shrimp sauce dish. Of course I add my own spices to take it up a notch. So far, no one that has ever eaten it has suspected it was jarred and everyone raves about it. I guess everyone has guilty secrets in the kitchen!

  9. I never had Hamburger Helper until hubby #2 introduced us. I blame his mom, who worked full time and took advantage of the convenience food of the 70's. He's hooked on Kraft M&C, too. I don't hate the HH, but he really likes it, so for now, if it keeps him happy, I'll do it. I usually try to hide the box though, so visitors don't see it, so don't tell, OK???

  10. I would never ever use any sort of convenience food. Never. Certainly not frozen pizzas on occasion. Nope!

  11. Lil' Smokies. That's my weakness. Mmm mmm mmm. I don't want to think of what's in them, I just want to eat them. And potato chips. I'm trying to make a good potato chip but so far they're no good so we still buy chips for our lunches. I think that's the worst of it. :)

  12. I'm delurking here in this post instead! I enjoy your site :)

I remember as a kid that a frozen dinner was a special event--eaten in front of the tv (never allowed normally) on a night my parents were going out.

I think this was the point of convenience food (at least originally), and I keep a box of mac and cheese and/or frozen pizza on hand for nights when I'm pooped or just tired of cooking.

  14. I'm trying so hard to get off of convience foods. This morning I made orange danish rolls for my kids. I also make some velveeta shells and cheese and taco dinner kits. I am really trying not too but sometimes its just so much easier and it keeps the kids happy! Don't feel bad we all have our weaknesses!!!
