Shhh, don't scare them away!
Did you know that at 105+ degrees it doesn't matter how well watered anything is- it wilts? It does, let me assure you. V saved my fall seedlings this afternoon by bringing them inside. They have been holding up remarkably well but today was too much. Fortunately they perked up again.I've been outside in the heat for most of the time I've been home. I picked a gallon bucket of tomatoes and a few peppers. But mostly I've been watering. It was still 104 when I got home this afternoon. It's nearly 9 pm and it's still 97 out there. It's just plain HOT!
I still have a bunch of peaches that I got on sale at the store. I've been letting them ripen on the counter and my plan was to make jam this evening but I don't think I've got it in me- it's 8:50 and I just don't think I can start peeling peaches. But there is always tomorrow. And I'm hoping that maybe I've got enough to can a few tomatoes- maybe a couple of pints of diced. We'll see.
I talked to Mom this evening. They are getting a harvest from the Amana Orange tomato plants I gave them. They are amazed at how huge and tasty they are (I guess they didn't believe me when I raved about them!)- and an added bonus- they evidently don't have vitamin K in them (red tomatoes do) so they don't mess with Dad's blood thinners. Hoorah!
Now, I've gotta go put my peaches in the fridge, check my tomatoes and go to bed. I'm tired. This heat is really taking it out of me and work continues rough.
I know, I'm checking weather.com obsessively right now! I'm right there with you about the fruit - I've frozen about 15 lbs of it in the last few days and still went back and got more strawberries and some blueberries today (not to mention my pears that really need to be canned or frozen).
ReplyDeleteAlso - I'm a dope and went on vacation this last week I'll be back tomorrow and will try my hardest to actually respond to that email!
Many of the peaches I got were too green to really process but now they're suddenly all ready at once.
DeleteI hope you got more rain out of this storm than we did.
Don't know how you do it - like the plants, I wilt. I would have made a very lousy pioneer!
ReplyDeleteI'm just really, really thankful that I've got air conditioning that I can retreat to!
DeleteThis heat is really starting to pi$$ me off. 106 here yesterday and you're right, no matter how much you water, the veggies just say "gawd help us" while they wilt away right in front of your face. Just got inside from my first watering of the day. I'm ready to move to Canada.
ReplyDeleteOf course, if we moved to Canada we'd complain about the winters....
DeleteBut yeah, this weather has DEFINITELY lost its charm!
Last night here in WV it was was 89 at 10pm. This morning at 6 am it was 82. There is a heat advisory to stay out of the heat and to bring your animals in. I wonder if it will be warm at Christmas. Maybe December will be fall, skip winter and go into spring in February....debbie
ReplyDeleteNoo.... don't suggest another non-winter! I don't think I could take another one. I hope you're cooler today- we are.
DeleteOh I hope you got some--that's just how we were last week, storms forming all around us but never arriving. SO frustrating! BUT, I can say that eventually they started hitting us, we're actually in a regular cycle of rain for the last few days: I'm SO hoping this happens for you soon too!
ReplyDeleteWe got lots of lightening, thunder and wind but very little rain- only 0.06 inches. sigh....
DeleteWith the new drought monitor map released today we've officially moved up to extreme drought- like I hadn't already noticed.
Yeah, we're smack in the middle of the WI extreme spot on the map. And I noticed it veered into Iowa this week. Still feeling a little relief here and hoping you're just a few days behind us rain wise. Hang in ther!
DeleteI hope those clouds are an omen of cool, wet days ahead. That is brutal weather.
ReplyDeleteI do hope you're right! It is at least 15 degrees cooler today. Only 90! And that seems like a welcome relief!
DeleteWHAT is with this weather this summer?? The heat and humidity nearly everywhere is next to unbelievable. We were so fortunate (SO fortunate, I say) to get our 2" of rain yesterday. Today it is still drizzling lightly on and off. Gardens are one thing but how do you provide relief for animals in this horrible heat? Hoping the month of August is NOT our hottest month as it usually is! Hang in there, Friend. With as hard as you work on your outside job, you can't come home and push yourself in this heat without hurting yourself. Take care.
