It got down to 26 degrees last night here. Brrr.... and while it was breezy and the frost only settled in low lying and sheltered areas things still got nipped about the edges.
My lovely Bleeding Hearts are all droopy :-(
As are the tips of the roses
Even some of the perennials that you'd think would be pretty hardy look bad. Above is the frost bitten Anise Hyssop
The leaves of the peonies are curled up. I can't tell how much damage the buds took.
Our June-bearing strawberries that are blooming in April (go figure!) have black little hearts from the frost.
The shoots of my newly planted asparagus got frosted. Ugh.
And when even the nettles look bad, you know it was cold!
The apple trees look pretty good but I can't tell if there was any damage to the blossoms or any fruit that may have set. I also can't tell if the red currants are OK. They look good but they are still blooming as well.
And finally, since there were other photos still on the camera when I downloaded these, I realize that I never shared with you the completed baby quilt.
K12 is my "super-enthusiastic" helper. The expectant mother pronounced the quilt 'perfect'.
It will definitely keep the bambino's little brain busy!! The giraffe print flannel that I used for the backing is so, so soft and for the binding, I used a bit of black micro-fleece. I've definitely got some texture and pattern stuff going on.
I'm sorry that happened to you. We got an over night frost too but it didn't seem to have the impact yours did. I just hope our ( mine and yours) fruit trees end up okay!
ReplyDeleteI think if it was one overnight frost we would have been fine but this is the third one in a row and another is forecast for tonight. sigh..
DeleteAnd glad to hear you made it home. I've been bad at commenting on other people's blogs recently.
Sometimes the damage isn't as bad as it looks, here's hoping!
ReplyDeleteAt least I know that none of the plants are totally dead. They will come back, they just look pretty bad at the moment.
DeleteDRAT!!! I was hoping frost would leave your plants alone! Tonight is our turn they are calling for possible high 30's, not quite as bad but could still damage the less hardy things that have started growing in earnest. The quilt is so cute, Judy! I am sure it will be treasured :)
ReplyDeleteI saw that the cold weather is working your way. We're supposed to get back down to about 30 tonight but it's clear and with no wind tonight the frost is likely to lay down thick.
DeleteIf we weren't 6 weeks ahead of schedule for things leafing out, this wouldn't be a problem. Our last freeze isn't usually until late April so this is 'normal' weather.
Aw heck, it hurts to see the damage the frost did. But I think also that maybe the harm to the plants won't be long lasting. Let's hope so at least.
ReplyDeleteSo much fun to see the finished baby quilt. I love bright colors for quilts for little ones! I'm wonder if that micro-fleece for the binding was hard to work with?
The micro-fleece was a bit bulky but not difficult to work with. I kind of cheated with it. Because I knew I didn't have to worry about it fraying, I just folded it over and stitched it on in one fell swoop. It was quick and it worked and it looked fine.
DeleteHi there,
ReplyDeleteWow! I sure hope that it isn't as bad as it looks. I hope you will still have a beautiful yard of flowers and fruits. :)
Oh the quilt is wonderful. Great job. I am sure the little one will love it. :)
Take care, Janet W.
I'm sure the plants will come back, we just may not have much in the way of fruit production this year. I'll be fine but I do worry about our orchard owner neighbor. For me it's a tree or two, for him, it's his livelihood.
DeleteOh my poor blossoms, umm umm I mean yours ,sorry ,they don't look to hot at the moment, bad mother nature. On the other hand ,your quilt looks just perfect and new baby will be so ever cuddled in it.Good job!
ReplyDeleteThe blossoms were lovely while they lasted! We'll see if we get any apples.
DeleteOh Judy ...
ReplyDeleteWe seemed to have made it through the frost/ freeze. I am so sorry that you didn't. I think we must have had a little more wind.
Your quilt is beautiful!! What fun!
I'm thinking that everything will bounce back but I'm not sure about the blossoms this year. I do hope the peonies aren't damaged. I love those. And there were some that I moved out from under a tree the year after we moved (it was way to shady and they weren't blooming) that have buds for the first time this year. I'm excited to see what color they will be.
DeleteAaawh, sorry about all your plants. We've had several frosts, but the plants so far don't look bad. I haven't planted anthing however. YOUR QUILT IS WONDERFUL!!!!How cute it THAT!!! You did a wonderful job!! Any babe would love to snuggle up with that quilt!! ...debbie
ReplyDeleteI haven't really planted anything much out in the garden yet... I wasn't THAT fooled by the weather. Thanks for the compliment on the quilt.
DeleteLove the quilt1
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteThe quilt is lovely!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of pastels for babies. Bright is so much more fun.
DeleteOuch! Darned fickle weather. I am sort of glad that our little warm burst happened a loooong time ago and buds didn't have the time to open before winter came back. I hope your apples made it through okay. That quilt is just beautiful - nice job! And lucky baby.
ReplyDeleteI'm more worried about my strawberries now. I'm sure they will set more blossoms but they were out so darned early.
DeleteHope everything comes out okay for your plants and flowers. In our neck of the woods, the March warm weather brought out the flowers on the fruit trees (and other flowering trees). April low temps have done some damage. :(
ReplyDeleteI agree with the others. Beautiful quilt!
Sorry to hear that you got hit by the freakish weather as well. This has definitely been a bizarre year all around so far.
