Ewww...

I saw something this afternoon that struck me as wrong on so many levels.  While K11 was at band this evening, we stopped at the grocery store for milk.  While walking through the produce department I saw a display of apples.  Crazy apples.  Flavored apples.  Apples that taste like tropical fruit and bubble gum.  EWWWWW.  What is wrong with apple flavored apples?  i understand the hope to get children to eat more fruit but REALLY???  That is just wrong.  And of course, there was the price.  $4.99 for a package of 4 apples!  No, thanks, I'll pass on those.  I'll stick to the local orchard.
I did manage to get to the farmer's market this evening.  I14 had to meet with his confirmation mentor before Sunday so I dropped him off and hit the last half hour of the market.  The last market of the season is on Saturday morning and there were so few vendors left this evening.  But, I did get some good deals, especially showing up at the end of the market at the end of the season.  I spent a total of $12 and got 4 giant butternut squash, a buttercup squash, a long island cheese squash and a HUGE head of organic broccoli.  Since my squash did pretty pitifully this summer I wanted to make sure I had some for the winter since I LOVE cubed, roasted squash over pasta with some parmesan.  Mmmm...

  3. We actually tried the Grapples. They smelled soooo good. We splurged on them since they were 4 for 3.99. They really didn't taste any different than the Gala apples that I normally buy. I guess you have to try something at least once. Although I have not seen any bubble gum apples...

I am another one that loves squash with pasta. Had it last night with ravioli actually.

  6. That is sad and sick at the same time. Wonder what marketing genius came up with that Franken Apple idea? Blech. Great haul at the farmer's market!

  7. Yet another step away from anything natural and wholesome. Blech. What in the world would they inject into the apples to give them those flavors??

Roasted squash on pasta? Just goes to prove that there is something new to learn every single day of your life! I love squash and I love pasta so . . . why not? I get so chirked up when I learn little gems like this through blogging! Thank you.

  8. Colorado Girl- you're braver than I. I don't know if I could get myself to try something like that. It just seems so unnatural.
Linda- Mmm, I haven't tried it with ravioli. Oh, our local store has a fabulous portabella mushroom ravioli I bet would be fantastic.
Miss eff- Yeah, I definitely wondered at the 'natural' part.
Susan- Marketing genious- I like that-it's an oxymoron, right! But seriously, who would think of bubble gum flavored apples.

  9. Mama Pea- I checked out their website. They say that they don't inject anything into the apples and that they aren't coated with anything... so, how does that work??? Definitely not natural in my book.
And squash on pasta- Oh, you gotta try it. I cut it into cubes and toss it with olive oil, onion, garlic, rosemary, salt and pepper and roast it until it gets soft and a little caramelized, Put on pasta and top it all with good parmesan. HEAVEN!!
