We're wet but fine

For anyone concerned-we aren't close to the locations in Iowa that had the tornados last night.  We did have a scary hour or so last night when the storm line moved through.  We were at the head of the bow echo (if you're familiar with those) so we had LOTS of wind and LOTS of rain.... 2.8 inches of rain.  2.25 of that came in about 45 minutes with strong winds and intense lightening.  The rain came out of the South, a direction we don't normally get driving rain from... so we re-discovered leaks that we thought we had fixed in the foundation.  Fortunately, nothing was damaged by the water coming into the basement and except for an extra load or two of towels in the wash, it wasn't too traumatic.
The rain was so driven by wind that it actually blew up under the chimney cap and we had water leaking out of the bottom of the chimney and it looks like a little rain blew under the roof vents in the chicken coop... but all in all, we fared well.  Not even any tree damage (thank goodness, we still have one downed tree from last year that we haven't touched).  But, sadly, my pile of dirt for my herb spiral is now a pile of mud  ;-)

If that's as bad as it gets... I'll take it and be thankful!

Hope others in the storm paths fared as well as we did!!

  1. I'm glad you fared well. Better a little rain in the basement and coop than the roof gone. We must have been on the fringes, because all we got was about 15 minutes of a light rain and then the sun. But it was a cold rain...debbie

  2. I was nervous and just waiting for that bow echo to slam into us and it slid by on the north side of town and we got nary a drop of rain or rustle of wind out of it. But looking off to the north, it looked like a war going on with all the lightening flashes. Glad to hear you made it through no worse for the wear.

    1. My Mom called this morning, wondering how we fared. It missed them as well. They got 0.1 inches of rain. But, yeah, the lightening was freaking amazing!!

    1. What I find scary is that it's only April! This was the kind of storm that we usually get much later in the summer!! It's going to be a looooong weather season this year.

    1. I was about to head to bed last night when I checked the radar... I opted to stay up for a bit!! Today, things are sliding mostly to the south and east of us. My parents are getting it today.

  6. Good news you suffered no real damage. We have a temp of 53 right now at noon. We've been out working in sweatshirts. BUT we're supposed to have terrific winds that are bringing in cold, cold temps this afternoon and then . . . dum-da-dum-dum, 3-7" of snow tonight. Arrrrrrgh! I don't think I'm gonna be surprised to hear of ANY strange weather happenings any more.

    1. Well, you know, it is only April!! If it hadn't been for our wacky March, I wouldn't think much of snow.

  7. Whew. That bow on the radar was what I was looking at yesterday! Creepy warm weather here and it feels kind of odd, we may get hit this afternoon. I was thinking it would just fit this spring to have fire warnings, frost, and severe storms in the same week!

  11. I'm glad that you are all ok.

I am so worried about my other Iowa blogging friends too. I hope they are well.

I also have family that I have never met in Iowa too. In the Red Oak area and Washington County.

And maybe other places too. I hope they are all ok.

Thanks for letting us know you are well even though it was scary there for a while.

    Take care, Janet W

    1. We're not far from Red Oak or Washington. Both those places should be fine. Most of the places hard hit were in the southern west/central part of the state. I 'know' some bloggers from that area that I haven't heard from so I hope they are well.
