The deck certainly changes the view of the house!
Work begins on the North wall of the addition. The door is being removed and replaced with a window. As you can see, this was originally a window and someone replaced it with the door (badly installed!). So we are actually restoring this to the way it was.
Framing goes in- this is no longer a door!
The window opening takes shape.
My discount blackberries will probably need watered tomorrow. We had a thunderstorm roll through about 6 am. The lightning flashed and the thunder rolled. Sadly, we got a disappointing 0.08 inches of rain. sigh....
The lineup of ferns. Justine and I made a run to the grocery store today since she had friends over this afternoon. I noticed that they had just marked down all the garden center stuff to 50% off! So, of course, I had to look. I picked up two new ferns since we'll soon be able to work on the shade garden.
I also picked up this quite healthy looking forsythia bush for $8. It is about 3 feet tall!
I picked up this hydrangea last week, when the garden center stuff was only 25% off. I think it's lovely. And there weren't any left so good thing I got it when I did.
As well as this one. I've never actually owned a hydrangea before. But they will go into that northwest corner where the shade garden will be. Both of these are types that if we change the pH of the soil they will change color.
The herb spiral is filling out. You can also see that we need to mow. The grass hasn't grown much with the dry weather but the clover is going wild.
And the window is in! This is just a temporary installation. It will come back out tomorrow. The siding can't be removed until the deck is gone and with the deck there, there has been so much water damage to the siding (and the deck itself and the underlying sheathing) that the project was bigger than could be completed in a single day. Tomorrow, V will need to go pick up three new sheets of siding panels to replace the damaged ones and then he and the children will finish the wall. The next few days look to be great weather for something like this but toward the end of the week we are forecast to have temps into the 100's so V wants to get this finished while it is still cool (it was near 90 today! but tomorrow is forecast only into the low 80's)
This will be another long week. We've got no forecast rain in sight and with hot, hot, hot temps I'll have to water the garden. I'm now looking at a 6 day stretch of work at the hospital so I'll not have lots of time at home. I was hoping to get my fall broccoli started today but it didn't happen. Oh well, there's always tomorrow.
You have a lovely house. What's in your herb garden? Is that Sage at the top? Tomorrows post for me is my herb garden as well.....
ReplyDeleteYes, that is sage at the top of the spiral. Moving down the spiral is Italian Oregano, English thyme. tarragon. Orange Balsam Thyme, chamomile, parsley, garlic chives, fennel seeds that haven't germinated yet, three kinds of basil and chives. Even though the chives are at the end of the spiral, the basil is actually at the lowest point (it's on a slight slope) so they will get the most moisture as it trickles down the spiral. The sage requires the least amount of moisture so it will do well at the top. I debated about putting my rosemary there but decided to put it closer to the house where it will be more sheltered. It is advertised as a rosemary hardy to zone 5 but I'm not going to tempt fate.
DeleteThats a really nice selection and I am sure it will be fantastic ones established. I want another herb garden and am thinking about a spiral too so I hope you will show us more as it fills in. Fennel is tall I hope you know. Very tall:) I am sure you know.
DeleteThe fennel is on one of the outer edges where it's height won't really be an issue. Of course, I'm holding my breath to see if it even sprouts. I've been trying to keep it watered regularly but nothing so far.
DeleteI've been watering in sections. It's so much to do at one time!
ReplyDeleteSince we've got no rain in sight I'll probably start doing that as well. Except for my vining plants, I'll probably deploy the plastic jug 'irrigation' system.
DeleteBeautiful hydrangea ,I wonder if thats the one I heard if you plant rusty nails under it ,it changes color, not saying it isn't gorgeous the way it is !MAYBE JUST ANOTHER OF ONE OF THOSE "OLD WIFE'S TALES" OR MAYBE WRONG PLANT
ReplyDeleteI've never heard about the rusty nails. But I do know if the soil is more acidic the flowers will turn blue.
DeleteI know how frustrating it can be when all you want is for the remodeling/building to be done, done, done, but you really are making great leaps and bounds. The view of the house with deck and all is so attractive. And your flowers and plantings are/will be the icing on the cake.
ReplyDeleteOur lawn is more than ready to be cut (and baled!) but it's because of all the rain which has encouraged it to grow to monumental heights!
Love seeing all the pictures.
V and the children got everything done except for the siding outside. Of course, the interior walls are still down to the studs but that can be done later this week when it gets too hot to work outside.
DeleteYour house is continuing to make amazing progress! It's looking great, and the plants will all be lovely!
ReplyDeleteWe're starting to be impressed with how it works. It definitely looks different than when we moved in! I can't wait to get landscaping in the shade garden Of course, not when it is in the 100's like it's forecast for later this week.
