Frantic Friday and an invite

I'm still here.  Things have been running at a frantic pace around here.  The combo of graduation prep, deck construction, work and the busy time of main season gardening have been keeping me hopping!
Currently, V is out mowing and I'm doing inside stuff.  The deck is finished except for the back stairs off the new section.  We need to fill in more dirt behind the retaining wall before we install them and that isn't likely to happen before tomorrow.  Once V is finished with the mowing (J18 or I will do the edging later today) we will make the marathon loop of shopping- not just for last minute party stuff but a few other stops as well.
We lost another chicken this week.  I came home Tuesday from work and went out to gather eggs.  They all came running out to greet me and, as usual, I did a head count... hmm... one missing.  I assumed that she was in the nest box.  But, sadly, as I entered the coop she was lying dead partially under the nest boxes.  Who knows. She had seemed fine the day before and everyone else seems healthy.  So, RIP Claudia (one of our Rhode Island Reds).  We are now down to 9 hens and Magnus.  Is it bad of me that I was disappointed that if one died it wasn't Magnus?  He has been such a jerk lately.  I know he's only doing his job of protecting his ladies but really.....

And now for the invitation part.  Since we are expecting quite a crowd tomorrow, a few more won't matter (we're planning for 100!).  So, any of you in the IC area that want to stop in and see the house, farm and the new deck- the party starts at 1:30 on Saturday the 19th.   You can do a meet and greet with the chickens!  And see my weedy garden...  and all the renovations we've been doing.  If you need the address, send me an email:  fullfreezer (at) gmail (dot) com  I would LOVE to meet you.

Ok, my 10 minutes of downtime is up.  Back to laundry and cleaning the kitchen.....

  1. I had to chuckle at your very kind invitation. Wouldn't you be surprised if about 100 of us bloggers showed up? (We'd all better bring a dish to pass.) You are so sweet to extend the invitation as I know you truly meant it.

We lost a chicken last week in just the same way. We could find nothing wrong with her at all. She was nice and plump so we know she hadn't been sick. Some of those things you can just never explain.

  3. Now wouldn't it be fun if we all came to see you?? All your regular readers!? Sorry to hear about Claudia. My vet told me a few years ago that birds were usuasally suseptible to heart attacks. Maybe Mangus sc_____d the life out of her and she died from exhaustion....Maybe she had too many eggs backed up...Is that possible?? I know nothing of chickens except they are good to eat. Happy Graduation!! Hope the party is tons of fun!!! ...debbie

  4. Good luck with your party! If we get a minute (we're putting in the patio, more plants, an herb spiral, and doing some concrete fountains this weekend), I might stop by to say hi.

I'm sorry to hear about Claudia. :(

    1. Wow! It sounds like you've got a busy weekend planned. Don't over do it! If you can manage it- this time the house will at least be clean! And the barnyard has been mowed.

  8. that would be fun,but I have to much on my plate right now,I decided on a taco bar. my sister is helping me and her neighbor gave her such a good deal on tables and chairs (he is in the business) 10 tables and 50 chairs $25.00 everyone else wants $2.00 a chair and each table $5.00---greed i know everyone has to make a living .i even had a discounted offer of a photo booth ( didn't even know they excited) but that was still way over my head. sometimes I wonder how far you are. the last time i was in Iowa was when a girl friend got in trouble in high school and went to Lavern to live out her shame( at least ,thats what you had to do in my day)it was the cutest town and the house she stayed in even had a window seats, awesome house. my grand sons great aunt and uncle live in Spencer, but I'm not even sure where that is . and to top everything off ,I thought I was on my way to brainerd for my sister 50th wedding anniversary ,my hubby forgot he said yes to it and changed his mind--hope your part goes well ,ours is on the 9th of June, what a min, did you say your was today the 19th?
