A little of this...

A little of that!  A little of everything.

It has been a fairly uneventful weekend.  It has been cold but with brilliant sunshine. We're forecast for snow tomorrow so we'll see what happens.
I was feeding my sourdough starter this morning and ended up with some extra that I couldn't bear to discard, so I tried a new recipe- sourdough muffins.
They were pretty tasty.  Not quite as sweet as my usual recipe but yummy just the same.  I have been amazed at how many sites about sourdough say to just discard any extra starter when you feed it if you're not baking.  Um... really?  I don't think so. So I see lots of experiments with sourdough starter in the future.
We also got what is probably the most awesomely colored egg ever!
The photo doesn't do the colors justice.  We have speckled eggs regularly.  Helen lays them and we get a speckled one fairly often from Gretchen.  But this one...  This one is really awesome.  Chocolate brown speckles fading to purple and blue.  Pretty fun.  Like Easter without the dye.
I also did something this weekend that has been on my to-do list for a while.  And now I'm wondering why I waited so long!  I made homemade laundry detergent and have been using it today for laundry.  Fabulous!  It seems to be working well for us- at least with the loads I did today so I think we've got a winner.
Otherwise, J17 and I have spent the afternoon with a zombie marathon.  I've been in and out of it, working on other things but it has been fun.  Makes me want to get ready for the zombie apocalypse, LOL!

  1. Mmmmmm yummy muffins :)

And a totally awesome egg. I wonder what causes that. I don't have chickens so I don't know about these things.

Apocalypse? Yikes! I'm not ready. LOL

Have a great week. Take care Janet W

  2. I copied your cranberry nut bread recipe awhile ago and my wife made some of it this weekend. I love the tartness of it and have been snacking on it all weekend long. Thanks for posting it.

    1. Glad you enjoyed it. It is so simple and so good. My children devour it whenever I make it.

  3. Did you make the liquid detergent or dry?? I have made the liquid, and need to make it again as I slacked off for a few months...

I have only had a couple of experiences with sourdough starter, but have been thinking about that again too...

There seems to be an awful lot of THINKING and very little DOING going on here at Honeysuckle Hill...

    Have a good Monday, Judy!!

    1. I made the liquid detergent. Our well water is so cold that I have trouble with any powder dissolving properly... and reading the two recipes, the liquid seemed a bit more cost effective- of course, I could be wrong on that.

    1. Debbie- there are lots of recipes for laundry detergent. I got mine from the feed store, LOL! It calls for Fels Naptha soap, washing soda, borax and water. I'll do a post sometime.

  5. Discard the starter?!?!?!!?! That just sounds so, so, stupid. The egg is really unique! Are Helen and Gretchen Welsummers?

    1. Leigh- that's what I thought as well about discarding the extra starter.
Helen is a Welsummer and I think this is one of her eggs that the speckles misfired for some reason. She usually has the chocolate/terra cotta colored speckles. Gretchen is actually a Columbian Wyandotte. I didn't think they produced speckled eggs but she does- I caught her in the act so I knew it was hers. Hers are much more faintly speckled than Helen produces and the spots vary from pale purple to brown. Who knows... They are pretty and taste just fine so I'm not going to complain.
Every now and then one of the Rhode Island Reds drops an egg with white speckles in the brown, which I hear is not uncommon.
