Asset or liability?

Hmm...  I've been musing today while I quilted.  It was pretty mindless and made for an idle mind, ripe for wandering.  I mentioned last night that J17 and I watched a zombie marathon yesterday.  We watched the marathon of The Walking Dead leading up to the new episode.  I don't know how I have managed to miss this show before now.  I LOVE zombie/alien/end of the world movies and shows.  But, I don't generally watch all that much TV so I guess I just never stumbled onto it before now.
But, watching that got me started thinking....  Am I Zombie Ready?
Not in terms of prepping for TEOTWAWKI...  I've got lots of skills and knowledge- we've got some food stores and are working to become more self sufficient.  I mean... am I ready?  Physically?    I've got tons of skills for rebuilding society if needed, but would I survive long enough to be useful?  Would I be an asset or a liability in a true life or death struggle?  Crazy thinking, huh? Shows what happens when I've got an idle mind.
But, I'm nearer to 50 than I want to think about.  I'm overweight and out of shape.  I would never make it.

I've been needing to lose weight and get in shape for a while.  I work at it in fits and starts but never seem to stick with it for very long.  So.... I'm going to start again.  This time... I'm going to get Zombie Ready. LOL!  Maybe this will help me stick with it.

What do you think?  Do you think it will work?

  1. What a great idea! The "Don't get eaten by a Zombie workout"!

(I get a share of the royalties for thinking up the title if you become a millionaire from it!)

  2. Musings to think hard about! Thoughts that go through my head....would my body be able to handle the stess? What medicinal herbs should I start learning about that could help my body with stress. We all need to start thinking. Good post.

  4. I started a Emergency Responder course and found out how out of shape I am when I had to do chest compressions for five minutes. Actually doing chest compressions would be a great workout for the butt and thighs. Mine burned for a couple days after. I need to get back into shape. 46 is too young to be calling myself old.

  5. This is so funny because my 16 year, 14 year and 7 year sons all discuss what we would do if we were to be attacked by ZOMBIES! We've decided that they always seem to move so slowly, we'd be JUST FINE!!!! (I'm glad to know we aren't the only people who ponder whether or not we're ready for a zombie attack)

  6. Carolyn Renee- OK- I'll share if I make a million!
dr momi- I'd worry that I'd be so busy running I wouldn't notice any herbs. Or, my luck- it would be in the middle of winter. Hmm, I wonder why no zombie movies ever happen in the winter.
Yart- Cardio it is. I did some time on the elliptical this afternoon.
Rea- Whoosh- 5 minutes of CPR... that would be a good workout!
Poppy- LOL! We laugh about the zombie apocalypse all the time. And even the CDC has gotten on board with zombies to help motivate people to prep for disasters. Zombies are the ultimate motivator!

  7. You make a great point! I too, have a big stash of foodstuffs, medication, all kinds of useful things stockpiled but my fitness level to outrun zombies - not so much!!! What are we going to do about this? Of course if all we have to do is throw quilts over their heads we're golden, but I agree, maybe we ought to brush up a bit on the physical thing haha! I started watching that show when it first came out and hubby laughed at me, now he's "all caught up" too thanks to the marathon LOL

    1. LOL! You do know how long it takes to make a quilt, I know you do. I can see it now "Oh, excuse me, Mr Zombie, I just need to finish this binding". Sometimes you crack me up!!

  8. Well, I think it has to be "the right time" for anyone to succeed at losing some of that extra weight and get back to being more toned. I've been feeling fat and flabby lately and, curiously enough, just this morning went out for my first power walk. Okay, so I may have over-done it just a wee bit (ouch, ugh, ooooh, oof, pain and slight agony) but I know in my heart of hearts it was good for me. Right now I'm not worried about out running anybody, but I sure would like to drop (or at least redistribute) about too-many pounds! (Before she lost so much weight several years ago, Dolly Parton always said she weighed one hundred and too-many pounds!)

    1. I spent some time on the elliptical both yesterday and today. Now just to keep it up. I'm good in a sprint but I'd never to the distance against a zombie horde.

  9. Oh I love The Walking Dead but haven't caught this last episode yet. I think its important to be zombie ready physically. I think your motivation would be fun. I see "Zombie Apocalyse Boot Camp" classes on the horizon:)

    1. And, of course, the elliptical has developed a 'wheeze' in the flywheel. It sounds like someone breathing so I can imagine someone coming up behind me. But, do zombies breathe? Hmm, I never considered that one....
But yes, "zombie ready" is the going term. When you're back on your feet you can join me at boot camp ;)

  10. I am so out of it -- zombies? Those movies gave me nightmares! But, you are right. Having a pack (herd? clutch?) of zombies coming atcha would definitely do something for the old cardiovascular system. Maybe I better work on it now....

    1. I believe the correct termination is "horde". Or a shamble. A shamble of zombies.

    2. Uh Oh, Miss Proper Terminology here. But really Justine- who will take you seriously with a flowerpot on your head? Although I do kind of like "A shamble of zombies". Although I also like Susan's idea of "A clutch of zombies"- makes you cringe.

  11. I think whatever mental gymnastics or tricks we need to get ourselves to do things is fine :) I bike to work mainly because I kind of hate taking the bus, and parking is too expensive. So it motivates me (and the rationale of saving gas etc). The 35 minutes (x 2) of exercise that I actually really need feels like a bonus.

But we totally use the zombie apocalypse excuse when people see our pantry stash (even though it's just for winter eating)! It helps to have gamer/geeky friends...

  12. It's never to late to start taking care of yourself. I'm 55 and and have lost 20 lbs. since Dec. I'm not "dieting" but cut my portions and changed my eating (no diet anything for me). I saw a dietician (free thru my job) and that helped a lot. You can do it!

  13. Check ,my blog for a helpful site I got from my dietician, free...
