150 crazy people read this?

Greetings and Thanks to all my bloggy friends out there!  I've been waiting to hit 150 followers.  I hit 148 and just hung out for quite a while.  Thanks to Mandy (Not our cat!!) and SciFiChick I made it!  I have been saving a couple of things for a giveaway to celebrate.  I figured I would host this either at 150 followers or 1000 posts whichever came first.  Since I've got a ways to go to 1000 posts it's a good thing this is happening now since I've got springtime, garden planning things to give away... A garden planning grid and a magnetic garden to-do list.
There will be two, I tell you, TWO lucky winners of this giveaway.  To enter, leave a comment on this post (by New Year's CST) sharing what your favorite garden vegetable is and a tip for helping it grow.  That's it, no tricks or links or anything.  And, yes, I'm open to international entries.
At the new year I'll draw two names at random from the entries.

Let the fun begin!!

  1. Congrats on the 150 mark!

Hmmm, favorite vegetable would be anything battered & fried or covered in cheese (DH said that ovewr my shoulder). I personally liked my Butternut Squash plants this year. Tip to getting it to grow? Get them darned squash bugs ASAP! Let 'em go for even a day & you'll be overrun with them. D.E. works only so-so with the adults, so picking off the eggs (underneath the leaves) is the best thing. And don't plant them in the same place two years in a row because of any eggs that may be dormant there.

  2. Hey! I'm glad I could help, but I think I got the better end of this deal...I'm really enjoying your blog.

My favorite in the garden is garlic. Plant it in the fall for a spring harvest and mulch, mulch, mulch. Oh, and remember where it is so when spring rolls around you're not thinking you have really happy weeds.

My other general advice for new gardeners would be: know 2 or 3 ways to cook something before you plant it, and know how to store it for later use. I learned my lesson with zucchini.

  3. My fav has to be tomatoes, any type. I just love em'. My best tip is to make sure you pick off the suckers as soon as they appear.

  4. Congrats on your 150 followers! YAYYYYYY! :)

Don't have space for a garden so I can't mention any tips. But I sure can tell my favorite...baby red potatoes and peas. Mmmmmmm.

Haven't had them in ages...boiled with a white sauce over them. sigh....yummy. :)

    Take care, Janet W

  5. Without a doubt, my favorite garden veggie is Silver Queen White Corn. Mmmmmmm, sweet and juicy! Not a large ear, but it makes up for it with delicious taste!! The only real garden tip I have which isn't new is to plant your beans with your corn, thus eliminating something for them to grow on. I did this years ago with half runners and it worked well!! Congrats on your 150th reader! that is quite a feate!! ...debbie

  6. Well of COURSE all these crazy people follow you, you are awesome! :)

Favorite veggie? A toss up between my love of my Brandywine tomatoes and the ease and dependability of good ol' string beans.

Tip? Just "walk" the garden once a week, pretend it's someone else's you are touring and just watch, see, smell and take it all in - enjoy the whole process whether the year is a success or a failure, hey, at least you're doing it! (Now if I could only take my own advice...)

  7. I think my favorite garden vegetable is fennel. I love to eat it chilled and raw! I'm not sure that I have tips to grow it since it seems to grow well on its own as long as the row is thinned. However, we are big on compost. Also, this year, we let the clover grow as a ground cover around most of our plants-which meant hardly any weeding.
    Congratulations on hitting 150.

  8. My favorite garden veggie is black-eye peas. Nothing better than a pot of fresh black-eyes. Yum! They are easy to grow and not fussy about soil conditions. Tip: ants on the plants are normal, they won't harm a thing. Also, I shell and freeze fresh peas during the first picking, then let the peas dry on the vine the second time around for dry pea storage.

  9. I love tomatoes! I plant dill downwind from my tomatoes so the worms go there 1st and are easier to pick off.

  10. Ohhh, how fun! Congratulations on the 150 fans. It's well deserved. :) My favorite veggie would probably be squash. Any type of squash. My tip, do what ever it takes to keep the dreaded squash bugs away!

  11. Congrats on the milestone! My favorite that I grow is the potato. It's like digging for treasure when I unearth them in the fall. Tip: make sure the ground is rich and not compacted.

  12. Being one of the 150 crazy people - congratulations! I think that one of my favorite parts of winter is ignoring it in favor of thinking about spring and planting! My favorite vegetable (that I've had success with) is the potato! After trying a whole bunch of different planting methods and mediums, I've settled on the stacked tire method. I have been able to grow an amazing amount of potatoes in a relatively small space and can easily attack pests when discovered.

  13. Sweet Corn, luckily I rarely have to much than make sure the soil is in good shape and that's not hard to do in Iowa.

  14. Of course 150 crazies read you! :)

My current favorite is okra, since I just learned to love it and it grows so well here! My best tip, get those weeds before they get you!!

  15. Oh gosh, I love just about anything fresh out of the garden. Okay, choose one. Alright, shell peas. They are labor intensive and take a lot of room to grow enough for a years supply, but, omg, when you have a serving of those fresh-out-of-the-garden tasting little green guys in February . . . heaven!

Garden Tip: Build up your soil and then plant intensively so the plants touch. You'll have very little weeding to do that way. And can grow more in a small space.

  16. Asparagus=patience rewarded. First veg. of spring, such a treat. Give it a good start and a little attention in the fall, and your set for years and years.

  17. My favorite garden vegetable right now would be any that makes it to maturity! It can be very challenging to garden here.

Funny thing - when reading some of the comments here I realized that we forgot to dig up some of our potatoes this past fall. They were planted in an old bathtub behind our shop. We can dig them up on New Year's day to start the next gardening season!

  19. Congrats!

I will always love the fresh garden tomato (although green onions are a close second). My tip: save your coffee grinds and eggshells and other tidbits and compost, compost, compost!! :)
