I got an invitation today. An invitation to a baby shower. On March 17th. Do you think I could whip up a baby quilt in time?
One of the social workers I work with is expecting at the end of April. Honestly, I've been so wrapped up in my own stuff that, while I realized she was pregnant, I didn't really think about it much until I got the invitation. Oh... I should do a quilt. That would be nice. Nothing fancy- just a baby quilt. But can I do it in just over 2 weeks? Hmm.... She is having a safari theme for her nursery (I checked the stuff on her registry at Target). I could do something simple- but I'd have to get the fabric. Oh, the hardship to have to go to the fabric store. I've got good stuff for blenders but I'd need a main theme fabric.
What do you think- is it feasible? Or should I just pick something off the registry?
Hmm, I'm leaning toward the quilt. Baby quilts aren't that big.
You should do it! I think you could whip the majority of it out in a day! Do take a photo of it when you're done!
ReplyDeleteI figure that not working Mondays gives me some extra time since it isn't really gardening season yet. And I'll definitely keep you all posted.
DeleteSure, you can do it! Just pick an easy pattern and machine quilt it, of course.
ReplyDeleteI actually made a baby quilt for a gal a while back who had signed up for the safari themed baby stuff at Target! I got a three of the little receiving blankets, cut them into an easy patterned quilt and it looked like something special. I even had enough fabric leftover to make a couple of matching bibs.
What a brilliant idea to use the receiving blankets! That may just work. And I always machine quilt baby quilts so they will stand up to being thrown into the wash regularly. I also try to put on a fairly dark backing since I liked to throw down quilts on the floor for play mats. With a darker back you don't feel so bad about putting it on the floor.
DeleteQuilt, quilt, quilt!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is 13, and still has the baby quilt that my Mother made for her. It's so much more personal than something off a list. =)
All of my children still have their baby quilts- my middle child (I 14) still sleeps with his!!
DeleteI agree with the other ladies, a quilt would be so much more memorable and meaningful. You are resourceful! You could easily whip up a quilt in two weeks time!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the vote of confidence. If I don't get too elaborate I should be OK.
DeleteYep, a quilt is a good idea. That would be great. I like the bib idea too.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see pics too. Take care Janet W
I like the bib idea as well- I'll see how much I've got left.
DeleteA quilt is a great idea! It will be such a nice gift!
ReplyDeleteI know I valued the handmade stuff I got the most when my children were born.
DeleteYou can definitely do it since you have a theme already! For me that's the longest part, deciding on a pattern and then fabrics. It will be a great gift!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to just wing it for the pattern! I hope it turns out.
DeleteYou can do it. I had a baby shower back in january at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. I started the quilt at 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning, went to a bball game and out to dinner and helped hubby in the barn Saturday for a couple hours as well...piece of cake:) Just make it a very easy pattern (I did 8" blocks out of 4 different fabrics).....
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I'm quite THAT quick. But great job! That's impressive!!
DeleteOh... I am chuckling to myself. Many years ago, a friend of mine was having twins, and I thought this would be a great excuse to learn how to quilt. I wasn't gonna do anything fancy, just fairly big squares... but baby blankets are small... how hard could it be?
ReplyDeleteSoooo, I bought the fabric, cut out a bunch of squares, started sewing them together and promptly got completely overwhelmed! Finally in desperation I called a friend who actually is a quilter (but hates to cook) and we made a deal. She knocked out 2 quilts in an evening, and I made her a bunch of meals to stick in her freezer. Everybody was happy, and I still have all the squares in a bag in my basement. Maybe someday I'll actually finish it, but at this point I'd say the odds are fairly low...
I "inherited" the blocks for the one and only quilt that my mother ever attempted. I held onto them for years and finally made them into a quilt. They were uneven and difficult to work with, but I made it work.
DeleteOF COURSE YOU SHOULD DO IT. YOU WANNA DO IT!! SOOOO!!! LETS DO IT!! YOU'LL FINISH IT UP RIGHT IN TIME TOO!! ...debbie
ReplyDeleteI hope you're right!
DeleteAbsolutely! And you should post a picture of it too, so we can all gloat and tell you we told you so! That would be a lovely present.
ReplyDeleteI'll definitely be posting on my progress. It does seem so much more of a "me" gift than something off the list.
DeleteYou can definitely do it - my husbands aunt gave us one that was made by some nun's in Minnesota it's called a "Eye Spy Quilt" it's just random 4x4 inch (maybe 3x3) squares hand ties together, it's made to be a baby quilt now and a game later on!
ReplyDeleteJust while you're out pick her up some diapers or something super practical - I got so many blankets for presents I've barely used them all (I always opt for the homemade ones first).
I've seen eye spy quilts. They are SO cool! But for that I'd have to raid my stash and probably get lots of other stuff to 'fussy cut' for the squares. I'm not up for that at this short notice. But, I've got the safari theme so I should be golden.
