Four and a fart!
Anyone with more knowledge of chickens know what causes this 'misfire'? It is kind of cute, but.....
It's odd, at first I thought it was a marble or something. In fact, it isn't very egg shaped at all being not quite round. Definitely a first for us.
Hi Judy!
ReplyDeleteI usually see these types of eggs when the hens are first "learning" to lay. Did you add any new baby chicks last fall? Otherwise, I got nothin'!
Hey, got your comment about the magazine article.... how weird is that? You're right... what a small world!
Penny
Nope, no new layers. I was wondering if maybe Micah is starting up to lay again after moulting earlier this year and this could be her. Otherwise, Who knows.
DeleteWhat the heck is going on? Is this the season of the weird-shaped egg or what? (I must admit I laughed when I first saw the picture!)
ReplyDeleteIt is tiny but I'm not sure it matches your flat one. THAT was weird.
DeleteWow. Tiny. Was it laid by a bantam chicken?
ReplyDeleteNope, I don't have any bantams, only full sized hens. My oldest are just a year old this week and the other seven will be a year in May.
DeleteWeird. I've got nothin' but I hope someone knows something! I'd love to know what the heck is up with that itty bitty egg!!!
ReplyDeleteI've done some checking online. Evidently, it is just a 'misfire' of the system. But it's kind of cute.
DeleteThat sure is strange. I'd like to know what the answer to that is too?
ReplyDeleteNever seen anything like it.
Take care, Janet W
I've heard of them before and see photos but this is a first for us.
DeleteI have heard these eggs to be called "fart eggs" (sorry, that's the word I heard!) or "wind eggs." I bet you can find some information about them online. We've only had one of them with our chickens and it only had white's in it and no yolk. What was inside the egg?
ReplyDeleteI've done some checking and had heard of them before. As for what's inside- I haven't cracked it yet. But it seems awfully heavy for its size.
Deleteyes,it will be fun to see how is the expert amongst you,did a robin stop bye--jk its not blue either?
ReplyDeleteLOL! I wondered at first, too, if another bird somehow got into the coop. If it was one of our blue ones I'd really wonder...
DeleteWe call them "wind eggs" (I guess that goes with the 'fart' LOL). When you open them there is either: just white or just one small yolk. It happens every once in a while.
ReplyDelete"wind egg" is so much more polite. The boys were tickled with the other name and amazed that I said it, LOL!!
DeleteI was thinking Bantam at first...what a really strange egg.
ReplyDeleteYou should save it actually - blow the egg out and make it into a kind of decoration for Easter maybe :)
I'm not sure I'm that enamored of it to bother to blow it. I've done that before and if I remember, it was a pain! But it is kind of fun.
DeleteHi
ReplyDeleteSometimes when an older hen is coming close to the end of her egg laying days, she will lay a tiny egg like your 'fart/wind' egg.
Oh Dear, I do hope my hens aren't reaching the end of their laying cycle. Most aren't even a year old and the oldest are just a year old this week.
DeleteCute :)
